Beyond the Hedges
Rice has deep and broad connections with the city of Houston, one of the most diverse cities in the nation, an epicenter for innovation and home to the world’s largest medical complex. Thanks to the Moody Foundation, students can leverage these connections to learn, serve and make an impact.
IRWIN M. “BUDDY” HERZ
The Irwin M. “Buddy” Herz Community Outreach, Leadership and Engagement Fund promotes connections between the Rice campus and the broader community. A speaker series will bring local and international thought leaders to campus and an internship program will allow Rice students to serve the community in positions beyond the hedges.
- Owl Edge Summer Experience Fund
The Owl Edge Summer Experience Fund provides financial support (living expenses, transportation, and travel) for unpaid or minimally paid career-related summer experiences, making these essential experiences possible for students who might not be able to afford them otherwise. The Irwin M. Buddy Herz fund will prioritize support for students pursuing summer experiences focused on public service within the greater Houston area, but will also expand support across the state of Texas and beyond as funding allows.
LEARN MORE ABOUT THE OWL EDGE SUMMER EXPERIENCE FUND - Owl Edge Externship Travel Fund
The Owl Edge Externship program connects undergraduate students to community and alumni volunteers for a short-term job-shadowing experience that provides early career exploration and opportunities to learn more about the volunteer's profession. The Irwin M. Buddy Herz fund will help students to cover travel costs associated with pursuing these externship experiences that take Rice students “beyond the hedges.”
